Smart Playlists? - Swindiff - 2025-04-22

Does anyone know if this is being worked on ?

I use Smart Playlists in Kodi a lot and this would be a great feature to add to Jellyfin.

I've heard of no one working on this.

But if you submit patches, we'll be sure to test 'em!

Way beyond my capabilities unfortunately lol

Missing Smart Playlists is the only thing that's holding me back retiring the plex server for good. Not to be a liar, there's one other thing but missing Dynamic Playlists are my major pain point.

Anyways, I stumbled on this project: https://codeberg.org/redxef/jellyfin-smart-playlist

Haven't found anything about it in the forums (maybe I'm not good at searching?).

Looks like it is actively maintained and I was able to cobble something together which makes me a playlist with only loved tracks from one artist. It's not really straightforward and updates happen as a scheduled task, so changes don't reflect immediately but I'm really glad this exists and I think I barely scratched the surface of what is possible. Maybe, because my brain hasn't found access to the way the lisp programs are written..

So, my question of course is: Does somebody here use this plugin and has some interesting filters to share?

I created a plugin like this, based on an old SmartPlaylist plugin that wasn't working anymore.
You can create smart playlists that will automatically populate with media based on the rules you add (media type, name, tag, genre etc). You can find it here: https://github.com/jyourstone/jellyfin-smartplaylist-plugin

I have to admit I was completely wrong and I owe the author of this plug-in an apology.
This morning I tried the plug-in and it seems pretty solid and It's very useful. Definitively the SmartPlaylist tool that Jellyfin was missing.

The only drawback is that only an admin user with access to the config/plug-in page can use the plug-in and create/modify the playlists.

It would be nice also an export/import function to migrate the configuration of each SmartPlaylist from an istance of Jellyfin to another or to have a backup.

Does this plug-in utilize smart playlists for collections?

If you mean make a smart playlist for movie or series, I think it's possible..

I tried this out, selected both series and movies, but the playlists didn't seem to populate very well. And then it's in a new playlists section and can't be used as rules for a collection, only added within a collection, so it's not the solution I was hoping for. But seeing these levels of automation inside JF is promising. Smart Playlists make my Kodi sing.
