more or less the same speed. Is there something I can do to improve things?

crf settings dont seem to work either

im not sure what else to check, i just compared to a machine here copying your exact ffmpeg commandline from the vaapi log

Intel® Core™ i7-9700T CPU @ 2.00GHz

only 1 generation newer but technically slower, same UHD 630 iGPU

it performed at 2.4x/52fps

not sure what your storage is but this was done using an nvme, other than that there should be no difference

RE: I7 8700 transcoding - Yoshim77 - 2024-01-23

Its on a 7200rpm hdd. I also have a ssd and the movies on there are actually running at ~40fps (which still isnt ideal). I didn't think it would make a difference, thank you so much for your time!

Do you know why the crt and codec quality don't make a difference? And by any chance do you know a quick way to list all the files encoded using hevc?

RE: I7 8700 transcoding - tmsrxzar - 2024-01-23

probably don't make a difference because it's all the same to the iGPU

as far as finding hevc files;
outside jellyfin mediainfo is a good utility, you can script it to scan all files in a folder outputting to a text file then you will have a media report
within jellyfin itself you can use the Reports plugin

So should I avoid 4k hevc files altogether? What ould you reccomend to buy a gpu?

RE: I7 8700 transcoding - Yoshim77 - 2024-01-23

I was also downloading and moving files a lot. Did that affect the performance too?

just be aware of them, they are the better videos and more modern

honestly, i would spend money on a client capable of direct playing hevc before worrying about the gpu

yes most likely, especially if it was reading/writing to the source or transcode target drive

wdym. I use jellyfin client on windows but sometimes I'm forced to use ios or chrome/safari if I'm not on my pc, I'd like to be able to see all movies in those cases too. Would a gpu be the most reasonable upgrade or is there something better I could do? (except for an ssd and I can't change cpu because it would require a mobo swap too)

RE: I7 8700 transcoding - tmsrxzar - 2024-01-23

what i mean is, clients tend to be cheaper options and clients that can do direct play tend to have better quality, making it a better investment

"sometimes I'm forced to use ios or chrome/safari if I'm not on my pc"

jellyfin is available for ios and most other platforms; i'm not an ios user so i'm not sure they do hevc but typically an actual client is better than a browser
(with the drawback that some clients are actually browsers then it's the same, obviously)

https://jellyfin.org/downloads/clients

i use android mostly, my devices vary widely but all of them do hevc playback, transcoding is only needed with some clients and some audio formats
with my android clients they all cost under $150 (except 2) which is far cheaper than a new gpu

Initiate a transcode. While that is going can you run "sudo intel_gpu_top" and tell us what the clock speed is for the GPU while transcoding is happening?
