After further testing of various other applications and LAN-facing web UIs, I think the problem is on the VPN connection/configuration itself. While Emby is able to login, playback doesn't work (in either the web client or the app). The Synology DS File app can't login. I'll take the discussion to my router vendor. Thanks.
