If there is a mismatch, Jellyfin will be unable to render the file. For instance, in the case of Kill Bill, did you check the file type to ensure it matches the extension? If it is an Advanced SubStation Alpha subtitle then .ass is the correct extension. With this in mind, I can't tell why Jellyfin does not like movies with subtitle .srt files that aren't first played in VLC first. Is this some kind of weird permission issue with Jellyfin's container? I might try Kodi on the same box to see if that has issues and if not, might choose to use Kodi instead since I want nice box art but actual subtitles that actually work. Kind of wish there was a cooler version of VLC that had box art too, then I would be set.
