Optimal way to setup jellyfin client on raspberry pi? - Cyno - 2025-01-06

I've had a rpi4 with LibreELEC and Kodi for a year or two now but recently it's started having lots of issues connecting to my jellyfin server on my PC.

Both Jellycon and Jellyfin addons for Kodi had trouble running some movies (outright crashes even though they work on PC client or web client otherwise), wouldn't always show up as discoverable (and controllable) from my PC (the dropdown that lets you choose on which device you want to play something on) and had trouble maintaining the library up to date, subtitles wouldn't properly switch. Jellyfin would constantly lose login credentials while Jellycon, while 'mostly' functional, was just inconvenient to search movies in since it was all just a big nested hierarchy of categories.

In any case... is there a better way of getting a Jellyfin client onto my rPi? I don't have an online smart TV so I can't just install apps on directly which is why I'm going with the rPi route. Maybe a different rPi OS or a way to install the client directly without going through Kodi, if that is even possible? Thanks

What Jellyfin server version are you running? Can you share your jellyfin logs via pastebin?

The only clients I know of that work on a RasPi are kodi-based ones, so it would be best to figure out why you are having playback issues

Here's the pastebin of server logs from that day: https://pastebin.com/bcU4X8J6. The crashing was happening in the evening after 21h

I'm probably due for a full reinstall of everything on rPi so I'm not excluding the possibility that something is just wonky with it, I was just wondering if there's something more stable for the next try. I don't need my rPi to do any transcoding or media management itself after all, I just need a player since the actual server is on a pc elsewhere. If there is no other option then I'll just try a fresh install with newer versions of libreElec, Kodi and the rest (if available)

The Kodi Sync plugin has it's own DB and it looks like there might be some sort of corruption in that plugin's DB. You can try backing up your Jellyfin data and reinstalling that plugin. Ensure that the plugin's DB file is actually deleted.
