Upscaling Options? - GilliganTheGrand - 2025-01-09

Hey all.

I'm rather new to Jellyfin, but I recently started running a local server out of my gaming PC. I bought a lot of blu-rays over the past few years and ripped the MKV files for digital viewing. So far it's been great and runs smoothly, but I noticed that when I log in on my 4k TVs to watch content, it's slightly... blurrier than when I would stream the same content another source. Most of my content is anime and the resolution is 1080p. When I log into crunchyroll on the same TVs and watch the same content, the pixels seem to fill out the screen and it overall looks better (even though both sources are technically only 1080p max). I can only assume the streaming services have some sort of upscaling built in to make the image crisper on larger displays.

I was wondering if anyone had any decent solutions for this or if I'm missing a key setting in Jellyfin itself. I am not technical by any means, but I have heard of some plug-ins that could help accomplish my goal. Is anyone knowledgeable on this topic? Also - is my assessment correct and this is a matter of upscaling or am I completely off-base?

Thanks for your time.

Is the content being transcoded when viewed at 4K?

RE: Upscaling Options? - GilliganTheGrand - 2025-01-10

Yep, I have that enabled. I use a Nvidia graphics card for my PC, so I enabled the Nvidia option. Should transcoding be off?

Having transcoding enabled doesn't mean transcoding happens for every video you watch. It only happens when the client needs it.

You'd need to share your logs to determine whether transcoding is happening. Use pastebin to share your logs.

The reason I ask is because that will determine whether ffmpeg is upscaling or the TV is upscaling.
