Buffering on PC and TV, works perfectly on mobile - jonnyeustace - 2025-01-09

I setup my Asustor AS3304T V2 NAS today, it's the first NAS I've owned so I'm new to all this stuff.

Specs:
-4x 3.5/2.5inch SATA HDD/SSD Bays
-Realtek RTD1619B ARM64 Quad Core 1.7GHz
-2GB DDR4 RAM
-1x 2.5GbE
-3x USB-A Gen 1
-Snapshot Center
-WOW/WOL Support
-EZ Connect
-EZ Sync

It's connected to the router by ethernet cable and only used over the local network. In the Asustor settings it's using HTTPS and TLS 1.2, a certificate has been created using Let's Encrpyt, and IPv4 and IPv6 DDNS Configuration is enabled.

In Jellyfin the only settings I've changed are the local HTTP port number which I've changed to 28096 from 8096 as that is what it defaulted to after installation, and I also changed the HTTPS port number to 28920 from 8920 for the same reason. Enable HTTPS is unchecked, so too is Require HTTPS, and the Custom SSL certificate path hasn't been added. I've also enabled IPv6 as well as the standard IPv4.

Under Playback I changed the Transcoding thread count to Max and under the viewers profiles I changed their Playback Video Quality settings for Home network quality to 120 Mbps and Maximum Allowed Video Transcoding Resolution to 4k.

When I try to play a 4k UHD movie on the PC and the TV using Jellyfin, the movie takes a few minutes to load, buffers every 5s or so and it is unwatchable. What's strange is that on the mobile it loads instantly, I can skip forward and it still resumes with no hiccups and there is no buffering whatsoever, it works perfectly.

Happy to share log files etc. to help diagnose the issue, please explain where to find these and I will attach them to the thread.

Can you share your logs via pastebin? Your NAS's CPU cannot handle video transcoding and it sounds like it isn't transcoding on your phone, which is weird.

Thanks, I used make mkv to rip the disk and then handbrake to convert it to h264 mp4 format. Is it possible to disable transcoding?

That is a weird video. 4K H264, 8-bit but BT2020 color space, and what looks like HDR10+ metadata? Uncommon and probably needs transcoding on a lot of clients.

Your NAS is transcoding VERY slowly. Not that your NAS can handle any amount of video transcoding.

Your options are to always use a client that will always direct play, pre-transcode your media, or have your NAS just be a NAS and host Jellyfin on a PC.

How would I go about pre-transcoding media?

With the weird video it is highly likely that I messed up some of the settings in HandBrake when converting from an MKV to an MP4...

Handbrake and Tdarr are two apps that come to mind.

Why did you convert from MKV to MP4 to begin with?
