Best Media Center OS for Jellyfin Client (JMP) - Anlec - 2025-01-19

I would like to know what the best OS for a media center PC running Jellyfin Media Player is.

Currently, I am running Ubuntu with Jellyfin Media Player (JMP). When I play HDR content in JMP, it looks the same as when I use the Jellyfin MPV Shim. However, I'm not sure if HDR is actually working or if the JMP and MPV Shim are just converting HDR -> SDR since Ubuntu/Wayland don't have support for HDR at this time.

I am willing to move to Windows or Mac if it means a better experience using JMP. I'd like to stick with a PC so i can browse the internet and do other tasks, which is why i'm not interested in something like libreELEC.

What OS platform has the best support for HDR content and continued support for JMP?

You would need to use MPV shim in order to get HDR content and change some configuration settings.

Forum topic with mpv.conf settings to enable HDR: https://forum.jellyfin.org/t-how-can-i-enable-hdr-playback-in-windows

It's compatible with whatever OS you'd like. Ubuntu or Debian would be my recs since you can run custom ffmpeg (e.g., newer jellyfin-ffmpeg than is currently implemented).

MPV-Shim doesn't automatically have an HDR default preset? Is what I am looking at SDR if i have the default settings?

MPV Shim hasn't been updated in a while, and the version of MPV it comes with didn't support HDR.

But MPV Shim allows you to swap out MPV with a new version, but even then still requires some tweaking.

Out of the box, MPV Shim will locally tone map HDR content to SDR.

Wow, well that's a bummer about HDR not working in my current config. I guess I'm just happy it tonemaps properly (or well enough).

Does JMP work with HDR out-of-box on Mac since the OS supports HDR?

JMP uses QT5 under the hood for rendering the UI, and QT5 does not support HDR. So JMP, currently, will not render HDR on any OS.

Development on a QT6 version of JMP has been in the works, but QT6 is vastly different than prior versions so the dev work has been slow as it requires a lot of re-learning.
