HDD won't park heads due to jellyfin - SjoerdHekking - 2025-02-01 Dear reader, I am moving to a new server environment. Proxmox, with a VM that has Ubuntu and Jellyfin. Nothing special. I mounted the HDD, with pass-through, mind you, I didn't virtualize it, because I don't want the other VMs to be able to access it. During no usage, the heads can be heard moving, clearly. Which is not good. On my old server it didn't do this. When I shutdown the VM, the HDD is unmounted and stops this behavior. When I do attach it to the main proxmox node, it spins, but doesn't make odd noises, as if the heads are moving quickly. Just noises I expect. What could be it? RE: HDD won't park heads due to jellyfin - TheDreadPirate - 2025-02-03 Is Jellyfin also installed on the HDD? Or is it on the NVME drive? Are there any background tasks running in Jellyfin? Like try play creation? Chapter image extraction? RE: HDD won't park heads due to jellyfin - bitmap - 2025-02-03 To add to TDP's suggestions: real-time monitoring? RE: HDD won't park heads due to jellyfin - gnattu - 2025-02-03 > I mounted the HDD, with pass-through Don't do this if you want the disk to ever work with its powersaving features. Instead you passthrough the whole HBA via PCIe passthrough so that the VM sees the disk as a native disk instead of a virtualized one RE: HDD won't park heads due to jellyfin - SjoerdHekking - 2025-02-04 To close this thread, I ran a 2-day long smart test with zero errors. It turns out that moving an old Jellyfin installation to a new server is not 100% smooth. Thus, this was the by-product of some wack shenanigans, probably caused by my super-niche use case. I cleaned the database manually, and it's gone now. It kept looking for something on the HDD it couldn't find (I cleaned the drive in another server whilst proxmox was installing and init'n) |
