Newbie Hardware Question - TCinthe303 - 2025-02-21

Hey everyone! I am new to Jellyfin and really media servers in general, but I am hoping to get started. My primary use will be local access storage of bluray rips, IPTV DVR, photo storage. As stated, I would be the only user, and it will be all local access. I can buy a used desktop for $20 with the specs below. Is this good enough to get started? Is there anything else I should change/consider to get going?
  • Acer Aspire TC-780
  • 3.00 gigahertz Intel Core i5-7400
  • 2TB Toshiba HDD
  • 12GB Ram DDR4 I believe
  • Intel HD Graphics 630

For one user, those specs are perfectly sufficient.

The only thing that you should consider are the possibilities of expansion. Does it have a 16x PCIe slot for a dedicated graphics card for transcoding? And PSU connections for said GPU? How many hard drive bays are there? Does the motherboard and PSU use standard power connections? So you can put the components in a new case with a new PSU, if needed.
