DVDSUB Subtitles - Tcon - 2025-02-28

Hey. I’m currently trying to get subtitles working on my Jellyfin server. I used extract subtitles for most of them but it looks like it doesn’t work for DVDSUB subtitles. Whenever I try to turn the subtitles on it has to transcode and the quality becomes trash and unwatchable. I turned on HWA with QSV hoping that would work. I have an i7 12700H with 16GB RAM. Even with HWA activated the quality was still pretty bad, better but still not watchable. Is transcoding DVDSUB incredibly taxing? I’d like to be able to have at least 4 streams running with subtitles if I needed. Would a GPU be able to handle that? I was wondering if I should try the M4 Mac Mini and see how well that does but I believe that is limited to only 2 streams with HWA active. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

AFAIK, only Jellyfin Media Player will be able to direct play DVDSUB. All our other clients will need a transcode.

As for the transcode quality, something is not configured correctly. With a 12700H the difference in quality should be minimal. Can you share one of the ffmpeg logs from after you selected Quick Sync?

Thanks! I’m playing it from the Google tv app. Is the Jellyfin media player a standalone app for desktops?
Can you tell me where to find the ffmpeg logs? The quality was similar to original for a bit but every five seconds or so, especially with movement on screen, it would drop again.

The ffmpeg logs are in the same directory as the main jellyfin log. You didn't say what OS you're using, but you can also find the logs in the dashboard.
