LG tv playback has started to lag/freeze every couple of seconds - CybranM - 2025-03-02

Hi! I'm new to the whole self-hosting hobby and I've set up a Jellyfin server on my Windows 10 PC to stream to my LG tv.
Everything has gone smoothly for the last two months or so until a couple of days ago when I noticed videos started to lag/freeze during playback on my TV.

I noticed it when I tried to play episode 8 of a show so at first I thought something was wrong with that episode but now when I go back and watch earlier episodes which ran fine just a week ago they start to lag now too.
When I say lag I mean they play for a couple of seconds (5-10) then freeze for a couple of seconds (1-5) then repeat. This didnt happen earlier and I'm not sure what's changed.

I've double checked that nothing thats network or harddrive intensive, like steam or backblaze, is running when I try to play these files on the TV.
I checked with the TVs webbrowser that I have enough bandwidth and it measured 94mbit/s down and 95mbit/s up (with 2.7ms latency if that matters), I run an ethernet cable to the TV to make sure the WIFI signal isnt the issue.

I've enabled debugging on my server and here is the log on pastebin.
I started the server, connected with my TV, navigated to "Perfect Planet Episode 1 Volcano" (row 1410), let it play for a bit, confirmed the lag/freezes then turned the client off, then closed the server.

Jellyfin version: 10.10.3
Windows: 19045.5487
LG G4 WebOS: 23.20.44
PC Hardware:
  GPU: 3080
  CPU: 5950X
Jellyfin Harddrive: 4tb Western Digital "WD4005FZBX"

If there is anything else I can provide to to help?

It is direct playing the video, so not much to work with in the logs. What codecs does the video use? Can you go to the movie listing in the Jellyfin UI in a browser, click on the "..." context menu, click "Media Info", then click the copy icon at the top and paste it here.

Back up C:\ProgramData\Jellyfin\Server and then can you upgraded your server to 10.10.6? I want to ensure we aren't encountering a bug we've already fixed.

I made a backup .zip and upgraded the server to 10.10.6 but the issue persists.
Here is the new pastebin with logs, same as last time I started the server on my PC, started the app on the TV, navigated to the show and episode, played it for a bit to make sure the issue was still present then closed the client and then the server.

To clarify something, is the TV freezing/unresponsive? Or is it buffering? Like the network speeds for the TV aren't fast enough?

RE: LG tv playback has started to lag/freeze every couple of seconds - CybranM - 2025-03-04

Hmm, I was pretty confident it wouldn't be a bandwidth issue as I have an ethernet cable to the TV but I did a sanity check and went with wifi to see if there was a difference in speed and there was.
With ethernet I had ~95mbit/s up/down and with wifi it was >200mbit/s up/down and I didn't notice any freezes/lag from my short test (which had multiple freezes when I tested with ethernet).
The episode bitrate is only ~67mbit/s plus however much audio takes but it seems like the bandwidth is indeed the issue.

I thought for sure the cable would be faster but that was apparently not the case, will look into if its solvable some other way as I prefer to have a cable instead of relying on wifi.

It seems this issue is solved, I'll write again if it starts to happen when I'm using wifi

TV ethernet controllers are notoriously bad. It is a check box they must check and they use the cheapest controller possible. The peak bandwidth is not a good indicator of the sustained throughput that video streaming requires.
