"Playback failed because the media is not supported by this client." - tobych - 2025-03-05

I'm a very technical chap, but I do not understand why I can't play WAV file on my Chrome browser. I have Jellyfin running in a Docker container on a Linux box. No hardware acceleration as it's an old server. Why isn't Jellyfin transcoding my WAV file? Do I really have to configure something deep in settings just so I can do this?

Playback failed because the media is not supported by this client.

Did you also disable remuxing?

I recently found that I was getting this same message "Playback failed because the media is not supported by this client" on almost all video files, running Jellyfin server on my Windows 10 desktop, and playing from client Android phones and tablets, in Chrome browser. Most of my video files were .avi xvid encoded movies, although .mp4 files seemed to work fine. This didn't seem to happen to me the first few months since I started using Jellyfin last December. I never found a resolution for this in Chrome, even though I tried to disable the "allow playing files that require transcoding" settings in the User settings. The workaround I found is to install the Jellyfin Android app instead of using the web browser interface. All issues went away immediately using the app. I am still curious what happened though.

We'd need to see your Jellyfin and ffmpeg logs to figure out what the root cause is.

Thanks, is there a guide for how to find those?

Navigate to your Jellyfin Dashboard and locate the "Logs" section. Reproduce the issue, then copy the most recent server and ffmpeg logs. Paste them on https://privatebin.info/ and share the links here.
