The silent drives thread - 34626 - 2023-09-22

Hi all,
Currently my setup is a Intel NUC N5105 with 32 GB DDR4 ram + 500 GB ssd (system drive) and 2 x 8 TB WD RED drives.

The reason for this thread, is that i am looking for more capacity, i could buy 2 more 8 TB drives since these are okay silent, but im wondering if anyone in here know about drives with more storage, but as silent as possible?

Do you have any recommandations for the +16 TB drives?

I read an article earlier today, about Seagate 16 TB expo and IronWolf PRO 20 TB, but i had the feeling the article might just want me to buy them, then actually giving me what im looking for, a good silent harddrive.

I use 3 x 18.0TB Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC550s & have had no problem with noise. found this review https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/p5k6qh/found_quiet_18tb_hdd_for_108tb_nas_build/

I actually has one a drive of that and have the opposite experience, especially compare to the WD red plus 8 TB.. Im wondering if my drive is bad..

Strange. I have a friend who has one that is noisy as well. He also has one that's quiet - maybe I lucked out.

You mentioned the 16TB exos. I have a couple of 20TB ones. I'm not sure how much they differ, but I can report they are quite loud. They spin very quietly but as soon as you're writing a bunch or anything that makes them bounce around a lot they are noisy. I would describe the noise as lower pitched than most noisy rives I have dealt with, to the point that I almost find it calming. Like the hard drive version of relaxing rain, was pleasantly surprised.
