Media Folder Path and Structure - johntha - 2025-03-07

Guidance to Media Folder Structure

Newbie running Linux Mint 22.1 and Jellyfin 10.10.6 on ancient AMD 64 PC with local hard drive.  Looking for the most basic server functions to stream content on this PC to LG TV on the same network.

Looking for detailed instructions on setting up Movie and Show folders that will be accessible by Jellyfin ideally without having to become an expert with permissions.  Willing to accept Jellyfin defaults wherever possible.

Our documentation has examples for how folders and files need to be named.

https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/server/media/movies/
https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/server/media/shows/

Whether or not your TV can play the videos without the need to transcode depends on whether the TV can play the codecs or not without modification.

This guide provides the basics for Linux permissions and provides answers for a common problem that Linux newbies have with "auto mounted" storage vs manually mounted storage.

RE: Media Folder Path and Structure - johntha - 2025-03-10

Thank you! So I have Jellyfin server finding and processing movies in their own folders at the end of this path
/home/johntha/Jellyfin Server Media/Movies/
and the server will play the movies in its own viewer BUT the server is not accessible to any client running on the same network. The sudo string reports server is apparently not running/ not found. ! I've allowed port 8096. What gives?
