Direct playback pausing/loading? - vica153 - 2025-03-10
Playing movies and it seems want to pause and load every minute or so. It's direct playing the file though that is "entirely compatible with this client". They're high bitrate movies, but nothing crazy and that doesn't seem like it should matter for direct playing. It's 30-60Mbps movies over a 300Mbps connection to the streaming box. Server and client CPU usage are both below 25%/.
Happens more often with higher bitrate DV, but still happens ever few minutes with 25Mbps HDR.
Jellyfin seems happy, so it's probably something else, but I'm at a loss so...

Where does the "300Mbps connection" come from? The reported "link speed" for the WiFi connection? Those are notoriously inaccurate. Or is that your Internet speed? Which doesn't apply for local clients.
It sounds like the network connection to the device can't keep up. What is the signal strength like at the client device?
Can you upload your jellyfin logs to privatebin.net? So we can verify what the server is doing.

The 300Mbps was from an internet speed test from the Fire Cube. Limited by the older WIFI of the 2nd gen Fire Cube, but the LAN connection is at least that fast.
I'll try to get the jellyfin logs uploaded.
Jellyfin looks like its working fine. It's seems likely an issue with the settings in CoreELEC not matching with the Roku TV, but I'm at a loss.

Adjusting the caching settings and I'm able to get it to cache 100% after ~2min of being paused, but that only gets me ~2min of playback. So everything seems to be working, but the connection is crazy slow.
Is the SMB connection really somehow limited to ~30Mbps? Will setting up HTTPS fix this?

Is the storage for your media going over a VPN/the Internet? If so, I found out the hard way that SMB does not like latency. 40Mbps was as fast as I could get for a SMB share over Wireguard.

Everything is just local. I did iPerf test between my cube and server PC.......~21Mbps. So apparently something is wrong with my PC network connection. It's 1Gbe wired to the router and the PC has no issue pulling 500Mbps from my ISP. Apparently the PC only wants to do 25Mbps out....

Swap cables? Transmit and receive happen on different sets of wire in the cable. So that could explain why receive is fine but transmitting wouldn't.

Would have liked for it to be so simple, but nope. Tried 2 other cables with no change. Also tried WIFI and it was still ~25Mbps.
