Live TV - Transcoding - thbkk - 2025-03-14

For movies and series, transcoding works fine. The cache is deleted according to the settings I've configured, but for Live TV, the cache is not being deleted. The streams are transcoding, but the cache continues to fill up without deletion. This is causing my boot drive to run out of free space.
Why is Live TV not behaving the same way as movies and series, with the cache not being cleared?

Are you saying that after you stop watching live TV the transcode files aren't cleaned up at all? Or that transcode files continue to be written after you've stopped watching?

Is the live TV fed directly into Jellyfin? Or are you using a proxy like TVHeadend or Threadfin?

RE: Live TV - Transcoding - thbkk - 2025-03-14

After stopping the stream, the transcoded files are cleaned up, but only once I stop watching. Unlike with movies or series, the files are not cleared during playback. The cache is never cleared in between the stream.

I am using my own TV proxy and have entered the IP and port in Jellyfin as an M3U source.

Ah. Yes. This is a known issue. Because of the way live TV works the "delete segments" function is never invoked. I looked into the issue a while ago but determined it was beyond my coding capability and the consensus was that this would require a significant re-write of portions of the transcode manager or live TV playback registration.

My suggestion is to change where Jellyfin writes transcodes.

Dashboard > Playback > Transcoding > Transcode path. You can set it to write transcodes/remuxes to any place Jellyfin has write permission to.

Thank you for the clarification!

Do you mean changing the path to a location with more available space?

Is there a way to deactivate transcoding only for Live TV?

RE: Live TV - Transcoding - TheDreadPirate - 2025-03-14

Yes, changing the path that transcodes are written to. Mainly just a disk that isn't your OS drive/application drive.

There is no way to prevent transcodes of just live TV. The Android TV app can disable transcoding with a client side setting. I don't recall if any of our other clients have something similar.
