Synology DS223 - James Thomas - 2023-09-24

Hi all,

Apologies if this isn't the place, and I have no clue what I'm doing.

I'm currently hosting Jellyfin on a VPS, and it's doing okay, whilst I haven't had time to sort and upload all of my media. - I'm looking to bring it in-house by purchasing a NAS.

I have found the Synology DS223 12TB 2 Bay Desktop NAS Solution installed with 2 x 6TB Seagate Ironwolf Drives (on Amazon)

My two questions are:

1. Would I be able to Install Jellyfin on this?
2. Would I still be able to allow access to Jellyfin to friends and family outside of my network?

Again, apologies - I'm not tech-savvy at all!

Kind regards,
James.

RE: Synology DS223 - skribe - 2023-09-24

Hi, James.

There are unofficial SynoCommunity builds of jellyfin for Synology devices. It's not a supported or generally recommended practice to run Jellyfin on the NAS itself, though. Some of them have hardware capable of running the server, but many of them do not. The ones with Intel hardware tend to fare a little better than those with other chips.

Best practice, instead, would be to use the NAS as a NAS (storage), and simply run the server software on a more capable machine elsewhere on the network.

We have a fairly new hardware selection guide here: https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/administration/hardware-selection

See if that helps, and let us know if you have other questions.

There is no difference with respect to remote access.
