App works fine; Chromecast Ultra buffers - Benke - 2025-03-22

I installed the latest version 10.10.6 on Windows and use the Android app to stream locally. It works like a charm. 😊

However when I try to cast to my Chromecast Ultra from the app it plays for a couple of seconds (about 30 or so), I get both video and sound, and then it just buffers and buffers and nothing happens. I just see a spinning wheel.

I've tried to cast from Chrome on my phone or using Edge on my computer and the results are exactly the same. I've also tried to connect my Chromecast Ultra wirelessly and it makes no difference so WIFI problems are out of the question.

I've hardware acceleration enabled and H264 and HEVC (which are the encoders for the movies I've tried). And I've a AMD Radeon 6800 XT.

Can you share your Jellyfin logs via privatebin.net?

Most certainly!

Here are the 2 logs. First one is when I start the movie on the Android app. The second log is when I switched to Chromecast Ultra. There is no error in the end of the 2:nd log.

Casting on older "dumb" Chromecasts has been hit or miss for a while. Some people have no issues, so due. I don't have a dumb Chromecast to test with and I'm not sure if there is a sure fire solution for this.

On the server side of things, those ffmpeg logs look fine.

I've read other threads that "older" Chromecasts could be a problem. I thought Chromecast Ultra 4K was to be considered new. 😄 Even though now that I look at the release date it has been a couple of years. 😅

What Chromecasts/Google TV streamer works better to your knowledge? I'd gladly upgrade if it works. Or are other streaming devices better?

If you don't have Dolby Vision content, or are willing to covert them to HDR10, the Google TV Streamer is solid. I have been happy with mine. However, if you care about Dolby Vision, the Google TV Streamer and just about all Fire TV STICKS use a Mediatek SoC that has bugged drivers that break Dolby Vision playback.

ONN TV boxes, Fire TV CUBES, and Roku Ultras are all solid devices.
