Server Deployment - LeetDwarf - 2025-03-23

Good evening all, I'm looking to take my first dive into deploying a media server for the family. I have a used MacBook Pro A1990. Specs are CPU: i7-9750H, GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 630 1535MB, RAM: 16GB DDR4 @2400MHz. Currently running Sequoia 15.3.2. I'm wondering if this will suffice to serve up my media, I won't have more than 2-3 streams running concurrently. Most streaming will be 1080p, with a few 4k titles. Will be connecting the MacBook to my NAS that is running TrueNAS Scale. Should I switch to Ubuntu? Any thoughts or recommendations are appreciated!

If you mean switching the Mac to running Ubuntu, yes. IIRC, jellyfin-ffmpeg does not support hardware accelerated transcoding on Intel Macs. Switch that to Linux and you're golden. The CPU in your Mac has a supported model iGPU for pretty decent transcoding support and performance.

Other than that, your setup is fine for your needs as long as you make the switch to Ubuntu/Debian/<insert Debian based distro>.
