h265 transcodes forcing audio to 2 channels - d3sl - 2025-03-24

[*]I have Jellyfin 10.10.3 running in an LXC on proxmox. For my player/frontend I use an old mini-PC running kodi that outputs via HDMI to a 3.1 soundbar which in turn continues to a dumb TV (no ARC). For the most part everything works great. The mini-PC is far too old to play h265 so I set the kodi plugin to always transcode those.

[*]The problem is every h265 file transcoded this way has the audio downmixed to 2 channels. I've tried every setting I can find related to max audio channels and audio transcoding in both kodi's jellyfin plugin and jellyfin itself but nothing seems to make a difference. I can't figure out why jellyfin is forcing h265 transcodes into 2 channels.

AFAIK, there is no server side setting to force audio downmixing. Or an equivalent per-user setting that syncs between clients. At the end of the day, the client makes most of the choices regarding how something is transcoding.

I'm not familiar enough with Kodi to assist with checking things on that side.

So it's more likely a problem with Jellycon/Kodi than Jellyfin itself then, interesting. Thank you.
