Run Jellyfin for Offline Family Videos Viewing? - MistaSpaghettiWestrn - 2023-09-26

Is it possible to run Jellyfin and its UI offline? Apologies if it's been asked a million times before.

I am planning on digitizing home videos from my past in order to better preserve them, but I don't want my loved ones to have to go through the typical process of digging through folders and folders to find the right file. I'm hoping (on their end) it'll be as easy as the streaming services you find on Roku or the Firestick (minus the commercials 😉)

The reason why I need this offline is because these are personal moments that I feel do not need to fall into a situation where someone who is not living with me gains access to them

What do you mean by "offline" exactly?

Jellyfin needs the server software running on a machine somewhere to serve content. But it does not need internet access. You can just run it on a machine on your local network and it'll work just fine for personal media. It just won't have access to features like metadata retrieval. But, of course, there's nowhere to retrieve metadata from anyway if it's home media.

I'm not sure I understand what you are requesting. Jellyfin can't be "offline" and be available to stream at the same time. If by "offline" you mean not openly accessible to the general Internet, this is the default state for Jellyfin and most routers. If the only clients you need to connect to jellyfin are on your home network, you can explicitly disable remote connections and define specific subnets to allow.
