Chromecast playback issues - rogue_cheddar - 2025-04-14

I'm runnning Jellyfin 10.10.6 under docker with the linuxserver image on an old Pentium with VAAPI enabled. Whenever I try to play certain files over Chromecast (tried with gen 1, 2 and 3), the TV shows as if it's loading and after a few seconds it stops and shows the backdrop.
From what I can gather from the logs, it tries to transcode and fails (For whatever reason, files played over Chromecast are always transcoded from 1080p to 720p unless I disable transcoding for the user). Here's the ffmpeg log:

If I disable video transcoding for the user, it tries to remux instead and fails to play but the logs show a different error:

As I said this error only happens with a specific set of files, most of my library I can play without issues even with transcoding.
What could be the cause of this issue?

This is a common experience with older "dumb" Chromecasts. I don't have one anymore so I've never been able to troubleshoot this issue.

I did some further testing and found out this is not a Chromecast issue, but a transcoding issue instead, I just happened to notice it on the Chromecast because it forces transcoding for whatever reason.

I tried playing said files on the browser client (using Firefox) and lowered the bitrate to 1.5 Mbps to force a transcoding and the video shows as if it's loading, then it freezes. These are the ffmpeg logs:

RE: Chromecast playback issues - TheDreadPirate - 2025-04-22

In your first log, if you are foregoing accelerated encoding, you should also disable accelerated decoding as well. Either by selecting "none" from the drop down or by unchecking all the codec boxes.

For your second log, one thing I, and other users, noticed was that "dumb" Chromecasts for whatever reason won't do more than 720P even though the hardware in the Chromecast supports it. And your video is 1080P.
