HDR Problem - ototos - 2023-09-28

Hi everyone, I'm trying to leave Plex to come over here.
I have problems with movies and TV series in HDR 1080p.
On Plex the colors are seen perfectly.
On Jellyfin, I see the colors dead, all faded, on dark.

I'm testing on a Chromecast Google TV 4K.

Thank you.

Is tone mapping enabled? Washed out colors happens when an HDR video is converted to SDR without tone mapping.

Settings > Dashboard > Playback

It sounds like you need to enable HDR tonemapping. Plex may already have that enabled, which is why the colors look better. See documentation here: https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/administration/hardware-acceleration/#hardware-accelerated-tone-mapping

What should I select in hardware acceleration?

I don't have a GPU, my files are all set up for direct viewing, without having to convert them, so I don't need a GPU.

Tonemapping is a process unique to transcoding. If your media didn't need to transcode you wouldn't be seeing this issue. It happens because the color information in the video when transcoding from HDR to non-HDR formats has to be remapped to SDR color. You would have to use an HDR capable display with an HDR capable client in order to view it correctly.

But Jellyfin does not have tonemapping support without hardware acceleration either way.

But I don't know which one to select, I don't have a GPU.
I only have an Intel Xeon E5-2680 v4 processor

You cannot select any of them. Tonemapping is not supported without a GPU for hardware acceleration.

but on plex I have no problems I can see well...
good problem...

Plex may have support without hardware acceleration. Jellyfin is not plex. You can always use Plex if it meets your needs. That's fine.

in the plex settings I have hardware acceleration active, but there it is more generic, just one click is enough.
On Jellyfin you have to make a choice...

For this reason I opened a post where the problems should be reported.
Jellyfin isn't perfect and I know that.... but we're here to report everything, and to make sure that the developers also know what they have to do, otherwise it's a project that dies and it's sad.
