access to media - Chris_in_soCal - 2025-04-21

I have spent days looking for a solution before asking for help on this but I can not find an easy answer.

I have a Ugreen NAS that I setup about a month ago. Originally I set up two 12TB drives in raid and 2 512GB M2 drives as in/out cache.

I was happily adding my collection of movies and TV shows and first tried Plex to view them. It was OK but recently Ugreen added Jellyfin as a native app and after trying it out I found it was much better for my needs. Everything was working great.

This is where the trouble started. Since I was keeping a full backup copy of all my stuff I decided to reconfigure the NAS. I changed the 2 hard drives to JBOD Volume 1 and the 2 M2 drives to JBOD Volume 2.

After restoring all the files back to Volume1\media Movies, TV Shows and Music Videos I reinstalled docker and Jellyfin to Volume2 for faster performance.

I was having trouble accessing any of the Jellyfin accounts and after a lot of work and reading here I was able to do the setup again and with a new Jellyfin account log into the web browser.

I have been unable to add any libraries since it appears that Jellyfin does not have read/write access to the media folder any longer. Under the Ugreen NAS User Management I might have deleted the Jellyfin account. Multiple reinstallations and it has not recreated it.

I can not find what username and password to use to create it myself to give Jellyfin access to the media folders.

I hope I have included enough information here to make it an easy fix.

Thank you for looking and I hope I can be help to others inĀ  the future on this site.

Regarding having to setup Jellyfin again. When you configured Jellyfin, did you specify folders on the NAS to store /config and /cache? /config stores all your permanent Jellyfin data, including accounts. If you didn't, that data only exists on the ephemeral file system for the docker container and will be lost when upgrading or reconfiguring the container.

As for permissions, I'm not familiar with how UGreen handles that. You both need to ensure that Jellyfin has permissions to read it AND map that path on the host into the container. Otherwise the container is unaware that it exists.

Yeah, that is the problem I am having. I was busy today/tonight but just tried again and Jellyfin said it can only run on the LAN (It worked last night). I uninstalled and reinstalled Jellyfin to Volume 2 M2 drives. I redirected the first option to volume 1/movies and the second to volume1/docker. I restarted the NAS. I opened Jellyfin and cleared the cache on the browser which restarted account activation. I was able to recreate the first account.

When I try to add a new library if I choose movie and add /Media it will accept it. I did copy a few MP4 to volume1/Media but after a refresh it does not see them. If I try to add a library to /volume 1/media it says the path could not be found. Please ensure the path is valid and try again.

That is what makes me think it is a file rights issue. Unfortunately the Ugreen NAS does not seem to have an easy way to get to a command prompt to try some of the command line entries to fix this like I have seen for regular linux solutions.

I am not giving up yet but it is a little frustrating. I have done some Linux stuff in the past but that was years ago and have forgot everything I had learned.

I was just poking around trying different things and tried adding /data/movies to movies and after 10 minutes of updating the library all of my movies showed up.

I then added /data TV Shows and /data Music Videos and a while later everything is back as it should be.

If others are having problems having your libraries show up just keep trying, you just might get lucky like I just did.
