fatal player error - Trevor Bell - 2025-04-28

So I am brand new to the world of home servers, so apologies if this is dumb issue to have.

I just installed TrueNAS scale, and installed Jellyfin today, and am getting a playback error with some of my test videos, while others are completely fine. Im pretty sure it has to do with my hardware accelerated transcoding as I am trying to use my GTX1070. The video that actually works for me is just a basic 1080p mp4 video, while the one that refuses to play is a 4k, HDR, 10bit, MKV.

in Truenas I made sure to check install NVIDEA drivers, checked the "use this GPU" box, which shows my 1070, and in Jellyfin I have Nvidea NVENC selected for my hw acceleration, and I enabled tone mapping. Thats pretty much all I could find after a few hours of googling, but that hasn't solved my problem.

When HW accelerated transcoding is enabled I get the playback error message, but if its not enabled then when I try to play the video it gets stuck loading and I have to restart jellyfin. I have also tried playing it in both the browser as well as the app on my phone, and I get the same error in both.

(I think this is how im suposed to show the log file? again im brand new sorry)

RE: fatal player error - Trevor Bell - 2025-04-28

Alright with the help of chat GPT I was able to figure out what was happening. I had allow encoding AV1 checked, which my graphics card doesn't support, as only the 40 series and above support that. unchecking that allowed for my videos to transcode properly.

My new problem is seeing if there is a way to improve gradient banding, as dark backgrounds with light gradients in front of it look VERY ugly. so if any of you have any suggestions for improving that I would be very grateful.
