struggling with my weak NAS, eithe docker or package - Netvudu - 2025-05-05 Hi, first post here. I'm aware my Synology DS220j is very weak, but since I don't plan to run any transcoding or anything in parallel I thought my Jellyfin server would at least run. I've tried both with Content manager (docker) and synocommunity package and in both cases I had the same issue. As soon as I install it and try to add any library it brings the whole NAS down to its knees. Everythign becomes completely non-responsive. I thought it might need just some time, but I left it more than 24 hours for the docker version and it was still the same. Ultimately I had to stop the process because it rendered my NAS unuseable for anything else. In the same scenario, PLEX runs absolutely smooth and without a single glitch and has for 2 years. Is Jellyfin really so much more resource intensive that I can't even run it? Thanks for any advice. RE: struggling with my weak NAS, eithe docker or package - bitmap - 2025-05-05 First scan may be a little resource intensive. I'm not super familiar with Synology, but are there additional parameters you can add to the docker run command or compose file used by the content manager? You might be able to limit Jellyfin to a certain amount of resources using Docker parameters until it completes the first scan and then free it up to do whatever it needs. RE: struggling with my weak NAS, eithe docker or package - Netvudu - 2025-05-05 That's what I thought, but after 24 hours, still the same? I have 1.5 Tb of database, which isn't that small, but not that huge as far as media collections go RE: struggling with my weak NAS, eithe docker or package - Netvudu - 2025-05-05 At this point, and after further testing and multiple installation attempts (including changing priorities) I suspect the DS220J is just not powerful enough to run Jellyfin, which actually tells me it needs way more resources than Plex does, since the latter runs flawlessly. I guess asking for a free tool to match the paid app was too much of a dream, oh well... RE: struggling with my weak NAS, eithe docker or package - bitmap - 2025-05-05 I take issue with your commentary, however I'll say good luck. Come on back if you want to give Jellyfin a chance. RE: struggling with my weak NAS, eithe docker or package - Netvudu - 2025-05-05 oh I'm not done with Jellyfin. I just think somehow the meagre 512megs of RAM of this crappy old NAS aren't enough to run it, so I guess I will have to wait until I am able to buy a better one. Trust me, I don't want to use Plex and pay for stuff that Jellyfin would grant me for free. I'm just hopeless. Even while I write this I'm attempting my nth installation which again is making my device kneel down under the crunch of Jellyfin. Even on low prio I can't access my media library while I look at the "thinking" circle in my screen for what it seems hours...because it is hours ![]() RE: struggling with my weak NAS, eithe docker or package - pxr5 - 2025-05-06 I didn't know that the DS220j could run Docker. I read up a little and seems it can with a bit of fiddling - just about. Maybe try running Jellyfin bare metal instead; though I'm not sure where the latest SPK would be for Jellyfin - maybe try the package centre/synocommunity You could also try starting with a very minimal library and see what happens on first scan, say a couple of movies and a TV series. Then just bring in more shows/movies in parts. RE: struggling with my weak NAS, eithe docker or package - Netvudu - 2025-05-08 Thanks. That's good advice. When I get some time I might try a very minimal collection of just a couple of movies to really test how it works RE: struggling with my weak NAS, eithe docker or package - CatWeazel67 - 2025-05-08 In the same boat. Had Plex running for years on a DS223j but can't even get Jellyfin web interface to load, like you everything just grinds to a crawl and timesout. Looks like Jellyfin needs a lot more RAM. Ended up switching it over to an old laptop and its fine there but another thing plugged in. |
