Hardware accelerated playback fails on MPEG2 DVD rips - somechap - 2025-05-10

Hi I'm getting a fatal error when trying to play back hardware decoded MPEG2 files.  H264 are fine.  ChatGPT thinks it's something to do with interlaced vs progressive.  The problematic MPEG2s are all DVD rips made with MakeMKV with no transcoding, so straight off the commercial disc.

Very grateful for any advice!   I'm no expert in this stuff!

- Jellyfin 10.10.4 on docker on Ubuntu 22.04

- GPU is your common-or-garden Intel HD Graphics 530

- GPU mapped through to container as - /dev/driConfused-facedev/dri

- VAAPI transcoding selected in Jellyfin

- ETA: The same files succeed and fail on both web client (Brave brwser / Linux) and Android; I don't think this is a client side problem?

- ETA: All these videso play fine on software acceleration, and at least some of them play fine with hardware acceleration, so I don't think this is a permissions issue?

- ETA: the MEG2 files are the vast majority of my library! I'd rather not have to transcode them all permanently; I've had them for years and they play fine in other environments (eg VLC etc).

As for logs, I've posted the container logs above; are there separate ffmpeg logs somewhere?

I've tried it with VAAPI and with QSV with no luck. It's a bit frustrating because other software (Plex, VLC and similar) play these fine, and it's pretty much the last thing I need to solve before I can ditch plex!!

You need to add the required groups to the container user, see my example below. Also you should be using latest, earlier versions than 10.10.7 have a security vulnerability.

Thanks, I've upgraded to 10.10.7, but am finding the permissions thing hard to configure right. I suspect my understanding of how users and groups are passed through to docker containers is sub-par, and the working week has got in the way of further investigation. I can say that my user account on the docker host can cat stuff from /dev/dri/renderD128, whereas my mapped user inside the docker container can't because of permissions. Hopefully I'll get to the bottom of it.
