PGS subs forcing transcode and dark videos - noyb - 2025-05-30
Hi All
I'm in a bit of a bind with PGS subs forcing a transcode which in turn makes playback of videos much darker even when they are HDR/DV, playing without subs removes these problems but then I don't understand anything being said
Plex doesn't seem to have the darkening issue although I'm sure it's also transcoding as I noticed CPU on my server is pretty high while playing, I moved over to jellyfin from plex as HW transcoding is only in the highest tier of plexpass and other than this darkening videos i'm very happy with the move
Is there any solution to this through transcoding settings or a way to automatically extract subs into an external format that will allow directplay, I have a large library and it's hard to tell what's PGS and what's ass/srt so ideally would be looking for something that works on the fly
I also have a small group of films that use DTS that's also forcing a transcode but not sure any of them are HDR so don't know if I will see the same darkening issue, my receiver supports DTS but for whatever reason the LG CX doesn't support DTS even as a passthrough to my receiver.
System details
Server Windows 11 JF 10.10.7 , Ryzen 5600G, RTX3050 - set transcoding to NVENC for all formats
tone mapping alg - bt.2390
mode - auto
range - TV
Clients
4K LG CX (main client) and Amazon fire stick for old TV in bedroom not 4K and won't do HDR/DV
