GPU for Transcoding - kebbino - 2025-08-02

Hi everyone,
I’m currently running TrueNAS Scale (Dragonfish) on Proxmox with GPU passthrough.
My hardware is old but still working well:
  • Motherboard: ASRock H97 Pro4
  • CPU: Intel i5-4670K
  • RAM: 32 GB DDR3

Right now, I’m using an old RX 460 I had lying around, but it’s not suitable for hardware transcoding (e.g., Plex/Jellyfin). I’m looking to replace it with something that works reliably with TrueNAS Scale in 2025.
I’ve been considering a few options, but I’d really appreciate advice from those with real-world experience:
  • What GPU would you recommend for hardware transcoding on TrueNAS Scale (Dragonfish)?
  • Preferably something low power, well supported, and ideally under €100-120.

If anyone has tips or knows which drivers are stable right now, that would be a huge help. Thanks in advance!

Intel Arc a310 is the answer. I use this on my TrueNAS server and it is a transcoding beast. If you need more VRAM then the A380 is the choice.

According to:

The 4670K support QSV.  Try the iGPU first.  It's free.

Intel is generally best for transcoding.  For discreet graphics, an Intel A310 should be a good fit.
