AV1 to HEVC = stutter - itex88 - 2025-08-07

Hello,

A friend uses a fire stick 3rd gen.

Info:

Fire TV Stick (3rd Gen) HEVC Capabilities:
According to Amazon's official developer specifications, the Fire TV Stick (3rd Gen) does have hardware acceleration for HEVC:
  • H.265 (HEVC): Hardware accelerated up to 1080p @ 60fps, 20 Mbps, Main 10 Profile Level 4.1, Color space 8-bit and 10-bit input with HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG.

The source file was AV1 1080p SDR around 2mbps bitrate.
The server transcoded to HEVC via hardware (VideoToolbox)

This plays fine on Android TV, iPhone, iPad, browser in windows. Nonetheless, on the firestick, it stutters as if the framerate was way down.. like single digit, but the audio played fine.

I had to switch server-side transcoding settings to disable HEVC, and this worked for them (sent H264). But this seems like a bug.. or some limitation of the fire stick. Anyone ever run into this? I don't want to keep HEVC encoding off.. since it helps with the higher bitrate files (example, a 10 mbps AV1 4k HDR may jump to 50 mbps H264).

Thanks
