Two resolutions of the same movie in the library are visible as two separate movies - godzinilla - 2025-08-11

Hi. I am a long-time Plex user. I have a fairly well-organized library of movies and TV shows. I am currently trying to configure a new Jellyfin server based on my existing library and am encountering a strange problem that I cannot solve. The items that I store in two resolutions: 4K and FHD are visible in the Jellyfin library as separate items - they are not combined into one item with the option to select the version to play.
After uploading my entire library to Jellyfin, I started experimenting with individual items, and it looks like this: I add the folder 2 - The Incredible Hulk (2008) to the library. There are 4 separate files in the folder:
  • The Incredible Hulk (2008) [EN][1080p].mp4
  • The Incredible Hulk (2008) [EN][2160p].mkv
  • The Incredible Hulk (2008) [EN][1080p].pol.srt
  • The Incredible Hulk (2008) [EN][2160p].pol.srt
So we have two versions of the same movie - one in FHD resolution, one in 4K. The format as you can see is not the same (.mkv and .mp4). In addition, each version has a matching Polish subtitle file. The naming convention is based on Plex requirements, but changing the naming convention to the one preferred by Jellyfin does not change anything.
In the Jellyfin library, the two movies are not grouped under one movie, but separated into two separate items - one with the movie in FHD resolution, the other in 4K resolution. Each version has a corresponding subtitle file assigned to it.
I tried uploading movies without .srt files, and I tried uploading the FHD version converted to .mkv - neither attempt solved the problem, the movies were still displayed separately.
Out of curiosity, I installed the Merge Versions plugin and after executing the merge command, both movies are still separated into two separate items, but each item shows that there are two versions of the movie available. When I enter the item with the FHD movie, I can choose between the FHD or 4K movie (the former is displayed as the default), while after entering the 4K item, it is the other way around.
The problem does not only concern this particular movie, but after adding the entire library, all files stored in this way are likely to be separated.

I am running my server on the Windows 11 machine.

Please see our documentation on how to name multiple versions of movies

Thank you. I read the instructions again carefully and found the solution. The folder where I stored the video files was not named correctly. After changing its name to match the file names (just the movie name + the year eventually), everything works as it should - now the library shows me only one item, and when I open it, both versions of the movie are available. And I have to admit that it's presented much better than in Plex, which I already like Smiling-face
