CPU upgrade or add a GPU - Fidel - 2025-08-15
Hi, new to everything here and im just curious/want some advice. Basically I currently am running an i7 4770 with 16gb of DDR3 ram and it doesnt really work for transcoding. Specifically it struggles with DTS audio conversions, it can just about handle one on a good day and transcoding 4k doesnt work. So I was wondering if I should either upgrade the platform and CPU entirely (and if so any reccomendations 14th gen? Or core ultra?) Or I should just get an arc a380 and call it a day. I do run a minecraft server and a discord bot or two on the system as well.
Any responses are greatly appreciated, I kind of have no idea in regards to jellyfin as to what specs are good and bad.

If you're just interested in trans-coding performance an arc card is the way to go.

I am using a GTX 970 for transcoding on unraid OS latest version, and using the latest NVIDIA driver for that OS running that patch for "infinite" lanes. Its more than enough to be honest, at least for around 3-5 users. Looks like it just takes a few percentage of the gpu power for each user transcoding.
This does not seam to be a big issue at all. I would not buy a new card for it at least.

The CPU is quiet old, but i would recommend you to get a Intel Arc A310 - it's a low power GPU that easily can do transcoding, just usw Intel Quick Sync
