Jellyfin on Shield - rgstubbsjr - 2025-09-12

Just a heads up.
"Unapproved apps" are disappearing from the home screen and list of apps from my Shield device.
Jellyfin is one of those apps.
Nvidia's response. Too bad. Sorry.

RE: Jellyfin on Shield - Venson - 2025-09-12

did you sideload the JF app?

or what do you mean by "unapproved apps"? i cannot find anything after a quick google search related to that topic.

RE: Jellyfin on Shield - rgstubbsjr - 2025-09-12

If you don't install to Shield from Google or Amazon it's "Not Approved" ie: anything you side load is not supported.
I've been running "Cinema HD", "Jellyfin", and "Smarttube" for over a year with no problems at all.
Last week they started disappearing off my home screen.
When I contacted Nvidia they told me:
Hello,

Thank you for your response,

Please note that applications installed manually through APK files are not officially supported on SHIELD. For the best experience and stability, we recommend installing apps directly from the Google Play Store on SHIELD TV. Since APK-sideloaded applications are not validated for compatibility, we are unable to provide support for issues caused by them.

********************

Like I said, Ive used these apps for over a year and they have never caused a problem, or disappeared until last week.
My entire media service is driven by Jellyfin. I can't imagine using anything else.
I suspect Google or Nvidia is wiping these apps. I'm hunting inside the code to see if I can discover how.
If I find anything, I'll post it.

Glenn

Why would you sideload Jellyfin?

This announcement was released a couple of weeks ago that Google will be stopping sideloading.

RE: Jellyfin on Shield - deraeler - 2025-10-09

Seeking assist with Install on NVIDIA SHIELD PRO (2019).
Installed from Google Play store - no sideload.

Cant locate a Server, nor can I find any doc on how to create one.

I presume I need some sort of Jellyfin database created.

I have a Synology NAS (older, cant install direct there)...been using PLEX.

Having trouble getting my Plex server running, but if it were would that be a visible "server" to Jellyfin?

Alternatively, looking for doc on how to create my Jellyfin Server that uses my NAS media files.
thx.

They announced an intention to block the usage of apps from unidentified developers. They can't do that until they have the registration system in place for developers to identify themselves. Here is an article on this: https://www.androidauthority.com/how-android-sideloading-restrictions-may-work-3595355/

Please note the timeframe for this is beginning in September 2026 in some countries (in South East Asia iirc), and a broader rollout in 2027. So no relation to the problem the OP is having.

But I do agree there is no reason to sideload the Jellyfin client.

Can anyone assist with just getting going with Jellyfin, per my post above?   I don;t want to sideload, I just want to use the freaking app.
Doc anywhere on how to create a database?

You can't run Jellyfin server on a shield the shield is just a client, So either install on a computer or NAS.

By the sound of it you may struggle setting it up on a NAS.
