RE: Jellyfin Stuck on Google Chrome for some movies (only for 4K i guess) - bkundework - 2025-10-08 I think I am having the same issue. Could this be the problem? Chrome and Edge Browsers running on a PC limit streaming of videos/movies to 720p if codex H264 is used. So for me, if I start a movie that is 720p/H264, the movie will start playing within a few seconds. However, if the movie is 1080p/H264 or larger, Chrome will not stream, but will wait to download the entire movie file before playing it. Sometimes I have had to wait 10 minutes or more before it would play. And while you are waiting, Jellyfin appears to be locked up during this time. There is a spinning circle, but no back arrow, nothing, no way to get out of it except hitting the Back Arrow on the Browser then Refresh. I have found two kind-of solutions. 1. on the client computer, go to Setup, Playback, and set Maximum Allowed Video Transcoding Resolution to 720 and also Check the box that says Limit Maximum Supported Video Resolution. This will get the video to stream but the size and quality will take a hit. 2. Re-Encode the movies to H265 (instead of H264). Chrome will stream 1080p movies in H265 codex and start playing right away. I have not tested this with files with a higher resolution. I wish there was a way to get Jellyfin to Transcode every 1080p H264 movie to H265 if it knows the player is a Chrome Browser, but I have not figured out a way to do this. If anyone knows of a way, please let me know. Good Luck RE: Jellyfin Stuck on Google Chrome for some movies (only for 4K i guess) - bkundework - 2025-10-08 The desktop app Jellyfin Media Player for Windows also has the same problem as above. So maybe it is a Windows issue. Most of my movies are 1080p H264 and I would hate having to convert all of these files to H265, so finding a reasonable solution is in my interest. I hope someone can help. Thanks to all. |
