Building new server - alan - 2025-10-30 Looking for hardware suggestions for a new JF server.Local use only, no NAS needed. Linux Mint. Time to upgrade or get new. Motherboard, CPU, GPU are my main questions. Have plenty of SSD (M.2) and a 14TB drive for media. Want to get something reasonably good to last. Maybe a new ATX box? $500-$1k. RE: Building new server - flymetothemoon - 2025-10-31 Usually a second hand low power business machine would be sufficient, with PCIE slot where you can add one Intel Arc card for transcoding. If you want new, then I would suggest a motherboard with build-in Intel N100 cpu or something newer, as long as you have a PCIE slot in the computer you can add Intel Arc card that will transcode everything no issues. If you need a lot of m.2 slots and a lot of sata ports then you need to look at specific motherboards, if you want low power then look for a cpu first and then motherboard that works with it. I use pcpartspicker to look at parts. Usually the more recently released motherboards have more m.2 slots. AMD cpus work well with linux so probably a recently released low tier cpu would be good because they are efficient and you can add a 50w Intel Arc to use with Jellyfin. RE: Building new server - 34626 - 2025-10-31 I would consider second hand, whats important is how big the case should be? How many drives and, be aware about the PSU - something can be too old. If transcoding is wanted, go with a Intel Arc A310 or higher GPU. Its hard to help you much more, we dont know what options you have to buy from. |
