Notifications of items added to server even though they exist - zollies - 2025-10-30
Been loving Jellyfin, much love to everyone involved in this project and making it happen!
I have a strange issue, though - when I start playing something, for example, a movie or an episode of a show, then I will get a notification that this piece of media (the movie or the episode) has been added to my server - even though it has already existed previously. It will notify me through all available notification methods, including web browser and webhook extension (in my case via Gotify). This also happens when I use the "Identify" feature and/or update the metadata.
Please find attached my log file. You can search for "Léon: The Professional" at this timestamp: [2025-10-30 21:17:51.840 +01:00] or "Wednesday" at this timestamp: [2025-10-30 21:28:54.093 +01:00]. The password for the 7z file is Password123! and is purely there so my personal data can't be scraped by other web services - for human eyes only!
Some things that I did recently that may have had an impact:
- Recently upgraded to 10.11.0 and 10.11.1 - but I don't think this is the cause
- I'm using the Linuxserver.io Docker Image for Jellyfin inside a Proxmox VM, and have some paths to my media library passed into it
- Recently, those paths accidentally got removed, and when Jellyfin started up and did a media scan, it started removing all media items
- Upon realizing this, I stopped the Docker container, added the paths back and started Jellyfin, and did a full media scan again
- Ever since that time, I'm now getting notifications of new items added to my server, even though they already exist
- To try and solve this issue, at some point I changed the "Date added behavior for new content" to "Use file creation date" but realised that was a mistake and changed it back to "Use date scanned into the library"
- I tried turning off all Webhook notification services, but it still notifies me via web browser pop-ups

Same thing is happening to me with the newest update. One of the files turned out to be a .rar — probably a virus — so qBittorrent blocked it, but I still got the notification.
For the rest, the files are valid videos and I can watch them using File Explorer, but they don’t show up in Jellyfin even though Jellyfin added the metadata and has the proper file names.

Thanks for the reply. I'm starting to think I should go back to 10.10.7.... but now that the jellyfin.db database file has already been converted, and the library.db file is not being used anymore (or is it?), I wonder if it's still possible...

I registered specifically to mention this. This has become the most annoying thing about running Jellyfin recently. Just in the past 30 minutes I've received over 40 notifications about Movies, Series, Seasons, and Episodes being added when they've been there for ages. At this point I think I'm going to disable this notification because it's driving me nuts.

Hi there, this seems to be the bug logged on the GitHub - https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin/issues/15245
I'm going to try and remove all NFO files from my folders to see if the behaviour stops. They can always be added later through Sonarr / Radarr if needed.

It didn't work. I deleted all NFO files with this command in Linux in a subfolder for a series:
find . -type f -name '*.nfo' -delete
Then I used the Identify feature in Jellyfin for that series and searched for the IMDb tt number, and afterwards I got a ton of notifications for items that have been added to my library, including for each episode individually.

After turning off all "NFO Settings" in Jellyfin Dashboard and also turning off "Nfo" checkbox for every library, the issue stopped happening. No more unwanted notifications!
