Would this be okay? - Svennai - 2025-11-02

Im new to setting up servers and Im attempting to turn my old PC stuff into a Jellyfin server and was wondering if this would work? (I know I keep seeing that Intel is recommended, but was just hoping this would be an okay option at the least)

AMD Ryzen 3 3200G with Radeon Vega Graphics
8GB RAM

I have an old GPU laying around that I could use if a dedicated GPU is needed (GTX 960)

Also I keep seeing people say if you dont need transcoding then you could use like a raspberry pi. In what instance would I not need transcoding?

Radeon Vega will be fine for at least a couple of simultaneous trans-codes. AMD trans-coding quality used to be bad but they're ok now.

Some clients can play most any file directly from the server. Others are limited with regards to which audio/video codecs they support, in which case the server will transcode to a suitable format.

Essentially, if you're using Kodi or Jellyfin Media Player as a client then you won't need trans-coding. Otherwise, it depends...
