Playback Error on MP4 Files After Upgrading to 10.11.x - justAGuy - 2025-12-15
Server Details:
OS: Debian 13
Jellyfin Version: 10.11.3 (installed via install-debuntu.sh)
Hardware: Virtual machine 3 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM
Installation type: Native
Hardware acceleration: None
Problem Description:
All my media files are in MP4 format (mostly H.264/AAC, I believe). They played perfectly fine (direct play) on Jellyfin versions up to 10.11.2.
After upgrading to any version > 10.11.2, playback of these MP4 files fails immediately with the error:
"Playback Error: Playback failed due to a server error."
Steps I've Tried:
Downgraded to 10.10.7 — I just had to scrap the vm after trying this and start a new one with a fresh install of 10.11.3
Performed a complete clean install of 10.11.3 (removed old config/data, fresh setup) — problem persists.
Occasionally, if I repeatedly click Play (letting it fail each time), then log out and log back in, it very rarely starts playing successfully. But this is unreliable and only works sometimes.
Additional Info:
This happens on [specify clients, e.g., web browser (Chrome/Firefox), Android app and Roku.]
Tried moving .jellyfin-cache and .jellyfin-config? but now I can't seem to find the post that referances it.
Direct play worked before;
No issues with library scanning or accessing the files otherwise.
Only thing I see in the log is one exception and it doesn't look like it is causing the issue.
