Hardware Transcoding crashes with specific files - crimp2333 - 2025-12-16

Hi guys,

I am using debian trixie, installed Jellyfin.Server 10.11.5.0 via the script from the jellyfin homepage. My GPU is a Intel Arc 310 but I had the the same problem with the intel i5-8500 internal gpu. 
I have some homevideos in HD which are crashing when trying to stream them over LAN to my laptop running Firefox 146.0. I can stream 4k homevideos and other Movies (1080 HDR 10bit etc.) no problem with hardware acceleration but the specific home videos keep crashing. 
When I disable HW acceleration it plays the homemovie but the cpu gets almost 100% load.

I hope someone can push me in the right direction.

You're transcoding from h264 to hevc for some reason, try disabling "Allow encoding in HEVC format", does this change anything?

The video is incorrectly encoded. It has contradictory video profile and pixel format settings.

High 4:4:4 Predictive must be encoded with yuv[j]444p*. The chroma subsampling should match.

is it possible to change those settings (video profile and pixel format settings) only for jellyfin without rerender the movies? Or is there a setting in handbrake which keeps the quality?
the Videos play just fine outside of jellyfin.

After further investigation, I discovered that the combination of Hi444PP profile and 4:2:0 pixel format is valid, but extremely rare. I will fix this issue on the server.

BTW: I used kdenlive and a default 1080p profile to render the videos.

https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin/pull/15819 should fix the issue.

I haven't used Kdenlive, but I believe it should allow you to set video profiles during encoding, such as for H264 4:2:0 8-bit, which is typically used with Baseline/Main/High profiles.

While the "High 4:4:4 Predictive" is compatible with 4:2:0 8-bit, it's overkill, as currently no graphics cards support hardware decoding of videos with this profile. In this case, the Arc A310 wouldn't be of any help either.

(I just wanted to point out that this video codec problem can arise when using vanilla Kdenlive. I will look in the kdenlive settings for my next video project.)
