General Debugging Techniques - lschapker - 2025-12-19

I have a a relatively decent ripped movie collection of about 5.2TiB (at least for me <grin>).  I have been using Jellyfin for about 2 years and have encountered "issues" from time to time.  Most of the time, I've been able to work around the troubles, but I wish to know how I might debug my situations "properly."  Is there any documentation to provide general "troubleshooting guidance"?

I "play" video primarily 2 ways:
  • via my Nvidia shield using the Android Jellyfin app
  • Via my Chrome Web browser on my Linux desktop.

Why I am asking this:
For the very first time, I have a rip of a 4k movie (High Plains Drifter) that will play directly off my NAS using "dragon player", but when attempting to use Jellyfin (either via Chrome on my desktop, or via the Shield), neither functions (the browser just "hangs" displaying the default graphic and the Shield reports that there was an error and it will re-try).  Attempting to play the 1080P version functions correctly.

I do not know how to debug this situation (i.e. what to look for, what info to collect, etc.).  I am looking for credible suggestions to make any further request for assistance semi intelligent and efficient.

Thank you!

There's a thread just above yours that suggested:

Under Dashboard → General → Parallel library scanning task limit, change it from blank to 1.

The basic issue is that 10.11.x is more aggressive at scanning which is causing issues with NAS/Network based libraries.
