Does transcoding happen when the media file and device have different resolutions? - Ghi102 - 2023-11-07 Say I have some media in 4K that I want to play on a device that only is in 1080p. Will my device support this and I can use DirectPlay? Or will my server transcode? What about playing a 1080p file on a 4k device? RE: Does transcoding happen when the media file and device have different resolutions? - abpjf - 2023-11-07 whatever client you're playing back on tells the server what it can support (video codec / video resolution / audio codec), if the client reports that the device it's on can't play back the content "direct" then the server will transcode on the fly; this is always 'downward' (4K->1080p for example) and never 'upward (1080p->4K). |
