4k transcode has muted colors in ellyfin - miguelelote - 2023-11-26

I backed up my DVD and Blu-Ray collection using Make MKV and Hnadbrake. The 480p and 1080p sources look great in Jellyfin. The 4k sources have extremely muted colors when played through Jellyfin.

See this screenshot. On the left if a 4k file played through VLC. On the right is the same file played through Jellyfin in Chrome browser (it looks the same on the Android client and on Google TV as well). You can see the Jellyfin player is showing very muted colors. Remember this is the exact same file.

I thought I had used the wrong settings in Handbrake's transcode. So I moved the entire Blu-Ray backup (straight from makeMKV's Backup option, no transcoding at all) to my Movies folder. Jellyfin found it and played.

See this screenshot. This is the Blu-Ray backup folder played in VLC and in Jellyfin. The VLC window has good colors, but Jellyfin again is very muted.

Why would this be? Here are the Playback settings I'm using in Jellyfin:
-Hardware Acceleration: Nvidia NVENC
-Enabled for: H264, HEVC, VC1, AV1, HEVC 10 bit
-Enable enhanced NVDEC decoder
-Enable hardware encoding
-Disable tone mapping

Turn on tone mapping.  If you have a Pascal GPU or newer, it will support tone mapping.
