Which option to pick for home-use server? - flurbed - 2023-11-26 Hi all! I'm currently looking into purchasing a new machine and one of the main uses for it will be to play 4K HDR content on our TV, and to transcode content to 1080p over the home network for f.e. the family iPad. The options I'm currently looking at are the Synology DS920+ which I've heard good stories about, and a Mac Mini with M1 chip. Which of these would be recommended for the described use-cases? I'm assuming there will be at most 1 transcoded stream and 1 4K HDR stream simultaneously. Thanks! RE: Which option to pick for home-use server? - tmsrxzar - 2023-11-26 synology is not recommended in general; and specifically because the newest version of jellyfin needs a kernel newer than they provide according to recent reports https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/administration/hardware-selection/ see the highlighted sections about macs for best results and ease of initial setup and use, linux or windows with an intel gpu would be my recommendation RE: Which option to pick for home-use server? - flurbed - 2023-11-26 Thanks, I've missed that page for some reason! So I'd be better off getting an Intel NUC running Linux then, I guess. I am planning on running everything in Docker, does that make any difference? RE: Which option to pick for home-use server? - tmsrxzar - 2023-11-26 only a difference of a "little" more configuration but i use docker and it works just as good as bare metal prefer it even for portability RE: Which option to pick for home-use server? - esol693 - 2024-01-19 I switch from windows to Linux to run my Jellyfin server.
