Switching from Plex to Jellyfin - BopnPop - 2023-11-26
So I've been slowly disconnecting myself from apps that push services and collect data and moving into selfhosted.
My current setup is Plex installed on my Synology (which hosts the media) and steaming to a Google Chromecast from my iOS device with the Plex app.
I have Jellyfin setup in a Docker instance. Both the plex and jellyfin instances are pointed to the media shares. It works good and I can easily stream to my home computer and haven't had any problems.
Where I run into problems is trying to replace my Chromecast and iOS app. If I'm honest, Plex "just works." No dropped connections or time outs. Not so with jellyfin.
Next steps are to ditch the Chromecast. This is where I get a little shaky on my knowledge and am hoping to get some help. It looks like a Raspberry Pi could work. If I go with Linux there is an official Jellyfin client. Can I control the client from my iOS device? Is there a better option? Should I get a generic Android device instead?
Am I asking the wrong questions? Can someone point me in the right direction?

If you going with the pi for a client I suggest using libreelec or osmc as the os and use the jellyfin addon. You can use the ios app to control kodi.
If you need a cheap android box the Wal-Mart onn stick is a decent choice, especially for the price.

IMO, the best cheap option is a Chromecast with Google TV HD or 4K. Good codec support, cheap, gets frequent updates (for Android TV).
