Banned from No-IP - vyyoid - 2023-11-29

I was using a free ddns.net domain from No-IP to host a basic Jellyfin server. I had the usual setup: Jellyfin behind a Caddy reverse proxy and a ddns domain. Today I realised that my server wasn't accessible from outside my LAN. I then figured out that my domain didn't exist anymore. When I try to login on noip.com, I get this error message : "Your account has been disabled for violating the No-IP Terms of Service".

I'm curious to know if the same thing happened to anyone else hosting a jellyfin server.

That's very odd. It honestly doesn't make much sense to me.

Did you get an email or something about it?

I used No-IP for a long time with my Jellyfin before I bought a proper domain. I've never heard of this with Jellyfin specifically. I guess switch to DuckDNS?

Nope! I received no emails or warnings at all. I have no idea what happened, but my account is still banned.

Thanks I will look that up.

Huh. Now I'm curious, is it worth purchasing your own domain for just jellyfin, or are you using it for other services as well? I'm thinking of expanding my servers to include nextcloud, and a gitlab repo. Where do you recommend buying domains from? I wish it were possible to make a one time purchase and own a domain forever, but doesn't seem like that's the case.

Currently, only Jellyfin.  But I have plans for a Matrix chat server and an email server.

Email? Oh wow, that's ambitious. I wish you the best of luck.
