Hardware choice for Jellyfin? - 8940324 - 2023-12-02

Hi everyone!

I currently run Jellyfin a virtual machine (on a VMware ESXi 7 host). My VMware lab is on two Supermicro servers (specs below), but I am about to change that for Proxmox. Since the Supermicro server doesn't have a GPU I cannot do any hardware transcoding, so I am considering using a spare gaming PC but would love some input.

Option 1: Supermicro Servers with Proxmox
  • Hardware: Supermicro E300-9D
  • Specs: Intel Xeon D-2123IT CPUs @ 2.20GHz, 128GB RAM, backed by QNAP NAS (14TB over NFS)
  • Setup: Run Jellyfin in a VM on Proxmox.
  • Consideration: CPU-based transcoding?

Option 2: Gaming PC with Nvidia 1080Ti
  • Hardware: A spare gaming PC.
  • Specs: Nvidia 1080Ti GPU, 32GB RAM.
  • Setup: Run Jellyfin on Ubuntu Linux or Windows 10 directly.
  • Consideration: GPU-based transcoding, potentially more efficient for high-res and multiple streams and 4K.

Eventually I would like to get a 10GbE QNAP NAS and a 10GbE switch. Right now I have a 1GbE managed switch for networking.

Any insights or experiences with similar setups would be greatly appreciated!

Of those two options, I'd choose the gaming PC. Transcoding will be MUCH better with a GPU.
