Hi All,
Getting into this big time now & am running out of storage space Currently have 2 x 2tB HDD's, one being the base version of the media files held within the other so that I have a complete backup in the event of failure.
Now thinking of having a newer PC (refurb. i5 SFF, cheap to buy, cheap to run) with 2 x 2tB ssd's (cheap to run) with the idea of having, initially, a system that I can leave running 24/7.
My current thinking is to split my existing JF setup to have film collections, films, kiddies, musicals, music videos, stored on one ssd, with TV stored on the second ssd. Having 2 x 2tB ssd's will allow me to use the existing 2 HDD's as the base backup in another PC. As I'm splitting the existing folders I can't just clone the HDD's so will need to migrate them to the new PC.
Question. I've read this guide https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin/discussions/6924 which gives an insight to editing the db files to change locations for JF without having to redo everything, but are there any likely pitfalls/problems/suggestions from anyone whose already done something similar?

if storage is the only consideration then why not spend that money on a seagate external 16TB and wait for a new server until it's needed? by the time it's needed you might be able to get a better one than you're looking at now for the same price

Not so simple, price of electric here is getting silly & my current server is an old AMD AM3 quad-core that max's at 120watts.
Forgot to add that, due to location, I'm thinking that sometime next year I could get a couple of solar panels, a cheapie sinewave inverter & I can "acquire" several 300a/h batteries, make the whole setup very cheap to run after the initial spend.

To answer your initial question, if you move files around Jellyfin SHOULD still maintain watch history when it identifies the movie/show in the new location. I've migrated some files around when I added a new HDD and the watch history followed.
Pro-tip, do the migration with the Jellyfin service STOPPED. Migrate your files. Start Jellyfin.
