4k vs 1080p playback - hillyarb - 2023-12-08 I just got myself a 4k disc ripper for Christmas. So I was finally able to get a digital copy of my Super Mario Brothers 4K + Bluray combo. I ripped the 1080p version a while ago, both with makemkv, I then used handbrake to convert to mp4 files. On the 4k file I just increased the max resolution to 4k but everything is the same. The results are pulled from my 1440p monitor, but I am getting similar looking results on my LG oled in the living room, with the same reason for transcoding. What is going on here? Is it a file issue or a client issue or a setting in Jellyfin or something else? I have made sure things are up to date, and rebooted the server. Thanks! Also tried to add a screen shot, can't get it to upload. 4k is washed out compared to 1080p. 4k: Playback Info Player: Html Video Player Play method: Transcoding Protocol: https Stream type: HLS Video Info Player dimensions: 2560x1291 Video resolution: 3840x1608 Dropped frames: 10 Corrupted frames: 0 Transcoding Info Video codec: H264 Audio codec: AAC (direct) Audio channels: 2 Bitrate: 14.9 Mbps Transcoding progress: 1.3% Transcoding framerate: 26 fps Reason for transcoding: The video's range type is not supported Original Media Info Container: mov Size: 10 GiB Bitrate: 15.4 Mbps Video codec: H264 High Video bitrate: 14.8 Mbps Video range type: HDR10 Audio codec: AAC LC Audio bitrate: 160 kbps Audio channels: 2 Audio sample rate: 48000 Hz 1080p: Playback Info Player: Html Video Player Play method: Direct playing Protocol: http Stream type: Video Video Info Player dimensions: 2560x1291 Video resolution: 1920x804 Dropped frames:0 Corrupted frames: 0 Original Media Info Container: mp4 Size: 4.1 GiB Bitrate: 6.3 Mbps Video codec: H264 High Video bitrate: 5.6 Mbps Video range type: SDR Audio codec: AAC LC Audio bitrate: 160 kbps Audio channels: 2 Audio sample rate: 48000 Hz RE: 4k vs 1080p playback - enesha - 2023-12-08 Morning SO I'm not entirely sure what's going on here. IS that log you posted from your ripping of the video? My first question would be why you are using makemkv and handbrake, and not just using handbrake directly? Secondly those numbers seem off. Neither your 4k or 1080 resolutions are correct. 4k is 3840 × 2160 and 1080 is 1920 x 1080 Is your 4k source really only 2 channel audio? I've heard people talk about washed out colors in HDR10, tho I've never had a problem personally. Perhaps look into HDR tone mapping? Not a specialty of mine, just some thoughts RE: 4k vs 1080p playback - TheDreadPirate - 2023-12-08 It sounds like you don't have tone mapping enabled if the colors are washed out. Also, HDR with H264 video?! I just kind of went off of a Jeff Geerling Youtube video and got started down the rabbit hole. It does appear to be an HDR tone mapping problem. Not sure how to fix it. Okay, I'll have to look into tone mapping on Jellyfin. I'm pretty new to all of this, should I be using H265 with HDR?? I tried out plex and it seems to be playing with the raw .mkv file alright, jellyfin still looked washed out. |
