Issue - firas1 - 2023-12-16

I have this issue that many of my movies and series played on my Sony X95L with the Jellyfin for AndroidTV app will somehow not trigger local dimming at all and the complete movie looks washed out and without any real blacks.
It may be triggered by Dolby Vision but I am not sure what exactly causes this problem. At least its really annoying. Is there any way to fix this or to disable Dolby Vision to see if that is causing the problem?

RE: Issue - TheDreadPirate - 2023-12-16

Sounds like it is transcoding and you don't have tone mapping enabled.

RE: Issue - firas1 - 2023-12-16

No, I only do direct streams without any transcoding. On some movies it works as expected and without any issues and on others it does not work at all.
Here are some metadata from a movie which does not work at all:

RE: Issue - firas1 - 2023-12-16

I just tried the same movie with the kodi app on my tv and there it worked pertectly. Seems to be an Jellyfin issue.

RE: Issue - firas1 - 2023-12-17

Is there any chance that a AndroidTV dev could look into this issue?

RE: Issue - firas1 - 2023-12-17

Maybe a quick workaround would be to choose if you want to watch your media in DV or HDR if thats possible to add this kind of settings?

RE: Issue - TheDreadPirate - 2023-12-17

HDR is definitely a weakness in Jellyfin and there are already quite a few HDR/DV related tickets open in the Android TV git.

RE: Issue - firas1 - 2023-12-17

For me it seems like its more of an issue with Dolby Vision instead of HDR.
When I play the movie with Jellyfin, it plays it with Dolby Vision and there I get the local dimming issue.
When I play the exact same movie with Kodi, it somehow plays it with HDR and no issue at all.

RE: Issue - firas1 - 2023-12-18

It seems that DV is the issue.

When I watch the exact same file on through the Kodi app on my TV it works perfectly.
I don't really know why Jellyfin uses Dolby Vision while Kodi uses HDR on the exact same file?

Here are two comparison images. The first shows the washed out, wrong picture which I get when watching it with Jellyfin and the second one when watching it with Kodi:

RE: Issue - firas1 - 2024-07-11

Hey, sorry to open this thread again. In a strange way the latest release of Jellyfin fixed the Dolby Vision issue in my case. The last time I tried it (about the time I opened this thread), Dolby Vision in certain aspect ratios totally disabled the local dimming function of my TV.
With the latest version of the App everything is working now.
The strange thing is that if I watch the same file on Plex, there the Local Dimming issue still occures. Do you guys know what has changed to fix this issue?
Would be great to find a solution for all of my TV apps and not only Jellyfin
